Ivan Fecan
President and Chief Executive Officer, CTVglobemedia; Chief Executive Officer, CTV Inc.
Ivan Fecan is President and CEO of CTVglobemedia, Canada’s #1 media company and CEO of Canada’s #1 television group, CTV.
CTVglobemedia owns Canada’s #1 TV network, CTV, Canada’s #1 national newspaper, The Globe and Mail; Canada’s #1 sports networks, TSN (English) and RDS (French); plus a wide array of leading conventional and specialty networks and radio stations across the country. CTV was awarded the domestic rights to the 2010 Olympics (Vancouver) and the 2012 Olympics (London).
In 1996, Fecan was appointed President and CEO of Baton Broadcasting Inc., which owned several television stations in Ontario and Saskatchewan and a 12 per cent interest in the CTV Network. Between 1996 and 2000, he reinvented Baton into a national player through acquisitions, mergers and start-ups, including the purchase of CTV and most of its affiliates (at which time Baton changed its name to CTV Inc). In 1999, he led the CTV purchase of NetStar (TSN, RDS and Discovery Channel Canada), making CTV the leader in specialty television. In 2000, CTV Inc. was sold to BCE and the Thomson family and Fecan was appointed President and CEO of Bell Globemedia, while remaining as CEO of CTV. A further ownership change in 2005 decreased BCE’s stake, increased Thomson’s, and brought on additional investors, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board and Torstar Corporation. As well, Fecan steered the company’s successful Olympic bid for the 2010 and 2012 Games and in 2006, helmed CTVglobemedia’s acquisition of CHUM.
Prior to this, Fecan served in a number of broadcast roles in Canada and the United States, from director, producer, station manager, development executive and VP Creative Affairs at NBC (under the legendary Brandon Tartikoff) to network programmer and head of CBC English TV.
Born and raised in Toronto, Fecan has a BA (Fine Arts) from York University and Honorary Doctor of Laws from Ryerson University and York University (with his wife, Sandra Faire). He is active in the community in terms of volunteering and philanthropy. Currently, Fecan sits on the board of the York University Foundation and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
